Depression During Freshmen Student Life

Being a freshman college student is a new student life experience. It can be happy. However, many college freshmen are always anxious and do not have enough confidence. They think that college life will be difficult and find it harder.

Depression can be a part of new college student life, according to the University health services of the Tang Center at UC Berkeley at uhs.berkeley.edu/home/healthtopics/pdf/depresstudents.pdf. This depression can be caused by the new overwhelming experiences and challenges that go with this new level of studies that freshmen find themselves in. College studies can be very stressful and cause sadness. This would last for weeks and interfere with academic and social functioning which can be clinical depression. This illness is common but usually not noticed. However, it can be effectively treated.

It is important to treat college freshmen who have clinical depression because it affects the body, mood, thought and behaviour. Students who have this have altered eating habits. The way they feel and think is adversely affected. They are no longer effective and efficient in studying and doing the other works they are obliged to do. Their social life is also affected. It is important to know that clinical depression is not a passing mood, a demonstration of being personally weak or a condition that can be brushed off alone. College freshmen who are clinically depressed cannot compose themselves to be cured. They need treatment and such has proven to have a success rate of at least 80 per cent. To add, most patients show progress in just a few weeks.

The first step to eliminating depression is detecting it. Then, the causes should be identified. The detection, identifying the causes and treatment help prevent many possible suicide cases. Freshmen who are new in student life should be informed about clinical depression so that they will detect if they will develop it at the early stages.
